This is an intermediate level technical position within the Heartland Business Systems Data Services organization responsible for providing operational and architectural database services for our customers.   Some of the primary responsibilities include architectural planning, implementing, performance tuning, consolidation and operational support for Microsoft SQL Server environments.  A successful candidate will be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, desire to mentor others, and be able to pick up new technologies quickly to meet the needs of the projects.

Essential Functions

  • Provide leadership role in designing SQL Server environments for our customers
  • Mentor other internal resources including developers in SQL Server principles
  • Utilize cutting edge technologies that match the fit for our customer from a budget, time, and technical needs
  • Troubleshooting and resolving issues with database integrity, performance, blocking and deadlocking, replication, connectivity, security and other issues that may arise
  • SQL Server engagements including health checks, remediation, architecture, consolidation, performance enhancements, migrations to Azure SQL
  • Work with customers assessing their SQL Server environments and providing tactical and strategic guidance to optimize their investments
  • Implementing and administrating MS SQL Server environments
  • Presales consulting in order to frame in solution architectures

Position Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or I.T. related discipline
  • 6+ years’ experience in database development and support of MS SQL Server environments
  • 3+ years’ experience with SQL Server 2012 or later
  • 2+ years’ SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) experience
  • 2+ years’ SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) experience
  • Experience with Azure SQL desired
  • Microsoft SQL Server Certifications desired

Skills & Abilities

  • Expertise in Professional Services or similar client facing roles in a client / vendor relationship
  • Expertise in database development and support of MS SQL Server environments
  • Strong experience in database administration in SQL Server
  • Experience in performance tuning, query optimization, using performance monitor, SQL Profiler, and other related monitoring and troubleshooting tools
  • Ability to identify and resolve issues with SQL Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space, and other resource contention
  • SQL Development – ability to write and troubleshoot SQL code and design (stored procedures, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, constraints)
  • SQL Development – experience creating database architecture with associated schema as part of a software design process
  • Familiarity with windows server, security delegation, SPNs, storage components
  • Strong knowledge of backups, restores, recovery models, database shrink operations, DBCC commands, clustering, mirroring, replication and high availability strategies
  • Able to triage complex component level issues including performance issues
  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver projects under tight timeframes
  • Produce high quality work deliverables leveraging defined methods / standards within Avastone
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to mentor other DBAs and developers and act as technical lead in projects
