Minor’s Garden Center
Success Story

Minor’s Garden Center Web Design

Goals

  • Updated web presence that communicates with two main customer audiences
  • Allow contractor customers to submit orders online
  • Ability to connect with consumers directly for promotions and sales
  • Provide a searchable database of plants in stock with photos

Challenges

Minor’s Garden Center is a large nursery and garden center in Milwaukee, WI. They serve commercial clients such as landscapers and consumers (home owners) from their garden center. Minor’s also owns five nurseries in the Milwaukee area where they grow their own shrubs and trees. Minor’s website was several years old and did not convey the scope of their offerings or position them well against competition from home centers and other garden stores.

The site had a database of plants, but it was difficult to keep updated and most plants did not have photos.

Solution

Heartland Business Systems created a new site for Minor’s Garden Center that presents the company in a way consistent with the quality of their products. Photography for the new site included people to demostrate the level of service provided by Minor’s. Because Minor’s is a family owned business, family members were used as the models in the photos.

A plant search provided by NetPS, a company specializing in plant search for garden centers, was included in the new site. The search tool is customized to show only plants available at Minor’s and allows visitors to search on many different criteria to find plants they want. The tool includes photos of all plants along with “My Plant List” where users can save plants they are interested in, then print it out and bring it to the garden center.

The new site includes an online order form contractors can use to submit orders directly to Minor’s. The form can be easier to use than faxing or calling in an order and ensures that all required information is included in the order – reducing the number of calls needed to confirm order details.

Homeowners can sign up to receive a regular newsletter with planting tips, specials and coupons.

The new site was developed in the Kentico content management system so it is easy to update specials and seasonal business hours.

Results

  • One of the larger contractor customers uses the online form to submit all their orders, streamlining the process for them and for Minor’s.
  • Use of the plant search tool is strong with 5-10% of users saving plants to My Plant List.
  • Email newsletter registrations have been strong, providing Minor’s a way to directly connect with customers that they have never had before.
  • The refreshed site design is more inviting and more reflective of the company’s products and service.
