Microsoft now ships two AI agents built to carry work forward on their own. Copilot Cowork takes a brief and executes it across your Microsoft 365 apps. Microsoft Scout runs in the background around the clock, tracking priorities and clearing the follow-up work that piles up between meetings.

Both are early, both live inside the Frontier preview program, and both are built on the same Microsoft Graph foundation. But they solve different problems. Here’s how each one works, what it takes to turn on, and how to decide which one to pilot first.

Copilot Cowork is your task-driven assistant. You describe an outcome. It plans and executes across Microsoft 365, and you approve before anything sensitive happens.

Microsoft Scout is an always-on autopilot. It runs in the background, learns your priorities and acts proactively to keep work moving, without being prompted each time.

Together, Cowork and Scout cover both ends of the work: what you hand off directly, and what needs to keep moving on its own.

What Sets Cowork and Scout Apart

Both agents work inside your Microsoft 365 tenant and respect the permissions and data boundaries you’ve already set. The real difference comes down to one question: who starts the work?

Copilot Cowork: You Ask, It Executes

Cowork turns a plain-language brief into finished work. Hand it a task and it plans the steps, works across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and SharePoint, and delivers an output for your review.

Cowork ships with built-in skills across the core Microsoft 365 apps, plus workflow skills for scheduling, meeting summaries, enterprise search and stakeholder communications. Teams can also build custom skills for their own repeatable processes.

Every Cowork task follows the same three-step loop:

Plan. You describe the outcome, and Cowork maps out the steps it intends to take.
Act. It executes across your apps, drafting, building, and organizing the work.
Approve. Before anything sensitive sends or changes, you give the final sign-off.

Cowork is a capable teammate, not an autonomous decision-maker. It moves fast, but a person still signs off before anything leaves the building.

Microsoft Scout: The Work that Keeps Moving

Scout is Microsoft’s first entry in a new category it calls Autopilots: agents with their own identity that work continuously in the background. Scout learns your priorities through Work IQ and acts on them proactively.

Day to day, Scout can:

Coordinate meetings across time zones and flag the ones that matter most
Flag priorities and risks, surfacing stalled decisions before they become blockers
Block calendar time ahead of upcoming deliverables
Track follow-ups and prepare the materials you’ll need for them
Work across Teams, Outlook, OneDrive and SharePoint without switching context

Scout runs under its own governed Entra identity rather than a shared service account. Every action it takes is attributable to a known actor your directory already understands, and it stays inside the permission boundaries your admins set.

Cowork and Scout are essentially different layers of the same technology stack, both are grounded in your Microsoft 365 data and shared Work IQ intelligence.
