Inside Copilot Cowork: The Skills, Workflows and Enablement Steps

You’ve probably used Microsoft 365 Copilot to draft an email or clean up a slide. Copilot Cowork is a different animal. Hand it a brief, and it plans the work, moves across your M365 apps, and hands back a finished output.

I like to describe it less like a smart autocomplete and more like a capable teammate who already knows your files, your calendar, and your inbox. Below, we walk through what Cowork actually is, the skills it comes with, what the day-to-day workflow feels like, and what your admins need to do to turn it on.

What Copilot Cowork Is

At the risk of sounding reductive … Copilot Cowork actually does the work. You can describe what you need and it will break the brief into steps, working across your M365 apps, and delivering an output. It runs in the background while you focus on what only you can do. The result is a shift from “Copilot, help me write this” to “Copilot, go build this and show me when it’s ready.”

What Powers Copilot Cowork

Work IQ

It sits on top of Microsoft Graph, which means it already knows who you work with, how you communicate, and how your organization is structured. That context is the difference between output that fits your team and output that reads like it came from nowhere.

Anthropic

Anthropic’s Claude technology is integrated as a subprocessor into Microsoft 365 Copilot, providing the reasoning engine behind Cowork’s multi-step execution.

The 13 Built-In Copilot Cowork Skills

Cowork ships with a library of ready-to-use skills spanning the core Microsoft 365 applications and a set of productivity workflows.

Custom Skills (up to 20)

Drop a SKILL.md file in your OneDrive to teach Cowork a repeatable workflow of your own.

The 5-Step Copilot Cowork Workflow

1

Describe. Kick things off with text, files, or voice.

2

Plan + Execute. Cowork loads the right skills and streams its progress as it works.

3

Steer. Pause, add context, or include more instructions mid-run.

4

Approve. Risk levels whown first, so you sign off before anything sensitive happens.

5

Review. Preview and download the finished output

Custom Copilot Cowork Skills: Make It Yours

Real leverage shows up when you teach Cowork your own repeatable workflows. Save a skill definition to /Documents/Cowork/Skills/SKILL.md in OneDrive and it becomes available to run on demand. A few examples of what to build:

Weekly status report pulls emails and calendar, then groups everything by project.

Client onboarding creates the docs and folders and sends the welcome emails.

Meeting prep searches your files and assembles a briefing pack.

4 Steps to Enable Copilot Cowork

Turning Cowork on is mostly an administrative exercise. Three steps live in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and are owned by a Global Admin; the final step is done by the end user.
Step Where Who
1. Approve Anthropic
Approve Anthropic as a subprocessor for the tenant.
M365 Admin Center → Copilot Settings → View all Global Admin
2. Enable the Frontier Program
Find the Frontier program and opt the tenant in.
M365 Admin Center → Copilot (same view) Global Admin
3. Approve the Cowork Agent
Approve Cowork for the organization, or for a pilot group.
M365 Admin Center → Agents Global Admin
4. User pins Cowork
Open it once and pin it, from then on it lives in your agents overview.

Note on Availability

Copilot Cowork and the Frontier program are rolling out across Microsoft 365 and the exact admin paths and naming may shift as Microsoft updates the experience. Confirm the current steps for your tenant before flipping it on broadly—and consider starting with a small pilot group.
